Oulun kaupunki aloitti hakkuut Sanginjoella tammikuussa 2012.

Sanginjoki Forest is a 2500 ha area including both managed and old-growth forests wholly owned by the City of Oulu. Biodiversity values of the area are at the same level as in southern national parks, e.g. in Nuuksio near Helsinki. Sanginjoki Forest is especially famous for its taiga species, such as several owl species and Siberian Jay observed in the forest regularly.

The forest is located only 15 km from the city center, and it therefore suits ecxcellently for recreation purposes for Oulu citizens and tourists. Several nature protection organizations have campaigned since 2004 to get the whole 2500 ha of Sanginjoki Forest protected and partially ecologically restored. A long-term plan is to establish a national park of Sanginjoki Forest, an own near-by national park for the City of Oulu.

If protected, Sanginjoki Forest will form a natural attraction of the City of Oulu and add a huge value and content into the Oulu brand. By far, the authorities and politicians of the city have agreed with protection of ca. one-fourth of the area. On 11th January 2012, new forest cutting and thinning started in Sanginjoki area after a 7-year-long moratorium in the forest. This has created demonstrations in the forest and in front of the city hall. For some reason, the authorities have so far ignored  all protests.

No discussions between the city authorities and organizations or ordinary people who want to protect Sanginjoki forets has not yet (14.2.2012) been arranged!
